When it comes to high definition technology, the mainstream public is just beginning to show widespread interest. High definition televisions (HDTVs) have been available for almost a decade, but are finally becoming affordable for the average consumer. There are two main types of HDTVs, Plasma and LCD. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display; these televisions contain hundreds of thousands of tiny pixels which work together to create a high definition picture. Plasma televisions contain a number of inert noble gases which use a light source to create a high definition picture.
Plasma and the LCD HDTV are quite similar in function, but the two technologies create a high definition picture through vastly different means. When selecting an HDTV, you should be aware of the price and the reliability of the manufacturer more than whether it is Plasma or LCD. In terms of picture quality, LCD TV units do have a slight edge, but it’s so slight that most people wouldn’t be able to recognize the difference.
