High Definition (HD) televisions represent the latest technology, and as you might suspect, some manufacturers have perfected the technology while others are still lagging behind. When it comes to choosing a HDTV, you’ll want to select a product from a reliable brand. Leading manufacturers of HDTVs include Samsung, Panasonic, and Vizio. The reputations of Samsung and Panasonic in the electronics industry are well known, but Vizio is a relative newcomer to electronics.  However, the Vizio LCD TV has earned an excellent reputation for performance, reliability, and affordability.

When you purchase an HDTV you want one that is on the cusp of technology, not one that is several years old.  Just like computers, technology in HDTVs becomes obsolete after a short amount of time, so make sure to purchase a newer HDTV model for the best value over a significant amount of time.

High Definition Television, or more commonly known as HDTV, began wide distribution in the year 2001. Today HDTVs are one of the hottest items on the market, and the most popular televisions in 2008. These televisions feature an amazing picture that’s up to ten times sharper and clearer than a standard television. In addition, several networks have begun to broadcast in high definition; but you can only take full advantage of this if you own an HDTV. The HDTV picture is so sharp that in the initial network switches to high definition, news anchors complained that they didn’t look attractive in high definition, and were having to spend much more time on make-up than before.

HDTVs are available from several brands in flat screen, panel, and plasma.  The highest quality picture comes from a plasma HDTV, and now you can even find premium quality discount plasma TV models online.

lcdsMost of the TVs in the Ratings have very good or excellent picture quality, so there are plenty of good choices available. Still, check detailed results for the highest-scoring models if you want top picture quality.

All tested sets 37 inches and up, and many of the 32-inches, have 1080p resolution. This has become the norm. In smaller sets, 720p resolution is still common, and it’s all you need, unless you want to use the TV as a computer monitor, in which case higher resolution is a plus.

We’re starting to see more LCDs with 120Hz technology and a few with 240Hz, though most sets still have a 60Hz frame rate. 120Hz is currently most common on larger, higher-priced sets, but it is trickling down to smaller and lower-priced TVs. This feature addresses a weakness of LCD technology: motion blur. It can minimize the problem when implemented well, but doesn’t eliminate it. 120Hz processing is often paired with a feature named Auto Motion Plus, Motion Enhancer, Motion Focus or Clear Frame, which can also provide smoother, motion with less judder (jerkiness), making images look more natural and realistic, most noticeable with movie content. But some viewers complain that the effect imparts a “shot-with-video-camera” look to movies. A few new sets let viewers control motion blur reduction and image smoothing separately, a plus.

lcdLCD or Liquid crystal display, is a type of technology that has been used and around for several years. It is a popular technology with a number of advantages over other technologies and has been used in just about everything from televisions to personal calculators to computers.

The popularity of the LCD TV is shown by the increasing sales of the sets. In 2007, for the first time, LCD televisions surpassed sales of CRT-based televisions worldwide. LCD TVs are, by far, the most widely produced and sold television technology today, and will soon surpass the large-screen format market as well - the plasma display panel and rear-projection television.
