samsung_logoFor decades all of the highest quality electronics were renowned to come from Japan, however in the late 1990s, more Samsung products started to appear on store shelves around the world. Samsung is based in Korea, making it quite unique compared to the Japanese electronics giants like Sony, Hitachi, and Canon.  Samsung products started off simple, but soon the company revised the design of all their products to incorporate a more sleek, stylized, and contemporary look. In the early 2000s, demand for Samsung Plasma and LCD televisions flooded the market, as the Korean manufacturer was one of the first to specialize in the newer technology and boasts many of the highest rated LCD TV units on the market.

As Samsung started to gain a positive reputation as a manufacturer of quality electronics, the company’s other products like Samsung cell phones, DVD players, and audio equipment started to gain recognition. Today Samsung is one of the most trusted names in electronics, with annual revenues even exceeding some of the Japanese giants.

Nobody in the entertainment industry could possibly have predicted just how popular television show DVD sales would be. In fact, some people bypass watching the show on TV at all and simply pick it up when it comes out on DVD. But technology has offered the next best thing for these individuals. If your schedule is hectic, it can be difficult finding the time to run to the store to purchase those DVDs. But with TV show downloads, you can watch all your favorite TV shows from home.

The most common complaint about these downloads is that you’ll have to watch the TV show on your laptop or computer. For many people, that means a smaller screen and an uncomfortable setup. But even this can be alleviated with a simply cable. Connecting your computer to your Toshiba LCD TV, you can display the images on your computer screen on your television screen. This way, you can enjoy your TV show on the comfort of your couch with the benefit of your full television screen.

plasma-vs-lcd

Near the beginning of the 20th century, two new types of display monitors began to receive mainstream acclaim, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and PDP (Plasma Display Technology) commonly referred to as just ‘Plasma’. These two technologies provide a high definition image on the monitor (whether it be a television, computer, or small device), but do so through different means. Plasma technology involves an inert mixture of noble gases held between two glass panels, through a complex process involving the gases being turned into plasma the monitor emits light and can display an image.  LCD technology involves tiny pixels arrayed in front of a light source, that then light up at various intensities to create the image.

In general, LCD technology produces a higher quality image, but LCD monitors are also much more expensive. LCD technology is also much more common in small devices than Plasma technology. You might find a 19 LCD TV, an LCD alarm clock, or a GPS device with an LCD display, while Plasma tends to be more restricted to televisions and computer monitors.

Still have that old tube television from the nineties? Or that big screen projection television you were so proud of when you first bought it? If so, with all the new high definition technologies, chances are you’re feeling a little bit outdated. But fear not, because purchasing a new high definition television is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be back in the driver’s seat of high technology!

~Choose your type - there are two main types of high definition televisions, Plasma TVs, and LCD TVs; these two use vastly different technologies to produce a high definition picture, but both achieve the same end. In general, Plasma costs a little less but doesn’t produce quite the same image quality as LCD; LCD costs more, but also produces a more high quality image. Keep in mind these images will be high definition regardless, and the chance that you will notice a visual difference between one and the other is slim. LED appears to be the wave of the future, as it requires minimal energy, has unparalleled picture quality and images won’t be burned into the screen.

~Choose your size - in essence, choosing the size of the television you want also relates to choosing the price; a large 52 LCD TV will obviously cost more than a quaint 16 inch unit. Remember, there’s no reason to have an enormous television if you don’t have a place to put it!

~Choose your brand and model - Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and LG have reputations for being the best manufacturers of high definition televisions. Choose based on price, warranty, and support for peripherals like video game consoles, computers, and high definition DVD players.

lcdMore commonly known as LCD, Liquid Crystal Display screens provide unrivaled image quality in comparison to Plasma and standard projection screens.  The LCD screen is comprised of thousands of tiny pixels that work together to compose high definition images.  LCD screens are often confused with Plasma screens.  The two both provide high definition images, but do so through much different technology.  However, the picture quality of LCD screens as a whole comes out better than that of Plasma.

Despite being the most advanced technology, LCD screens have existed for decades on a smaller scale, while Plasma screens were only integrated into the mainstream in recent years. LCD screens are by far the more portable and practical of the two, able to be inserted in small devices like an LCD digital photo frame, or compact devices like cell phones. A top rated LCD TV is now the gold standard in the industry as well.

For six months out of the year, I remain largely indifferent about the shows on television. From mid February to August, my couch just gathers dust as I’m out snowmobiling in winter, kayaking in summer and hitting the gym on a regular basis. Everything changes in September, however, when the NFL season returns. Sundays are almost wholly reserved for football viewership.

Last year it struck me: I had a house that was quite conducive to hosting football parties. My wife spends most of the day on Sundays at church and visiting with her family, so the entire place is free for my NFL festivities. I recently purchased a 42 LCD TV online, and it saw plenty of use this season. Although March Madness is enjoyable, I can’t wait until next football season.

When it comes to high definition technology, the mainstream public is just beginning to show widespread interest.  High definition televisions (HDTVs) have been available for almost a decade, but are finally becoming affordable for the average consumer.  There are two main types of HDTVs, Plasma and LCD.  LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display; these televisions contain hundreds of thousands of tiny pixels which work together to create a high definition picture.  Plasma televisions contain a number of inert noble gases which use a light source to create a high definition picture.

Plasma and the LCD HDTV are quite similar in function, but the two technologies create a high definition picture through vastly different means. When selecting an HDTV, you should be aware of the price and the reliability of the manufacturer more than whether it is Plasma or LCD. In terms of picture quality, LCD TV units do have a slight edge, but it’s so slight that most people wouldn’t be able to recognize the difference.

Had you gone to an electronics store and asked for a discount on a high definition television a few years ago, it’s possible you would have been laughed out of the store! High definition televisions, even five years ago, started at prices that would be considered astronomical by today’s standards. It was common to pay up to a thousand dollars for a television that was 14″ inches! But as high definition has become more common and more electronics manufacturers have perfected it, HD TVs have gone down a lot in price.  You can find a discount LCD TV or plasma at most all electronics stores or online, and now that HD TVs are more common, you receive a lot more bang for your buck.

HD TVs—whether LCD or Plasma—offer amazing improvements in the quality of picture and sound when compared to older televisions. If you haven’t purchased an HD TV yet, now is the time, as the technology is perfected, the cost is low, and HD TVs are liable to be around for quite some time before there is an available upgrade.

home-theater-systems

My wife and I have always been dedicated cinema patrons; we like seeing critically acclaimed movies on the weekend they hit theaters whenever possible. But lately the numerous distractions and inconveniences associated with the Cineplex have tested our patience. I can’t even count all the times our viewing experience has been interrupted by a ringing cell phone or a blissfully unaware “texter.”

We decided to look into home theater systems online. Watching movies at home allows us to view them at our own pace, pausing the action whenever we want to grab some food or take a bathroom break. Best of all, we don’t have to deal with the rude, inconsiderate hordes of people who seem so intent to ruin things. Waiting a few months for a DVD or blu-ray release is well worth it.
