When it comes to my son’s birthday, I admit that I usually get it wrong. I still think of him as a little boy, so I get him toys and gift certificates to science stores so that he can keep up with his original interests. But I’m realizing that maybe I should step into the times and get my son a present this year that will really blow him away.
As much as I would like to still be buying him action figures and Pokémon cards, I realize that it is time for both of us to move on. He has been asking for a Panasonic HD camcorder for a while now, and I think that with his grades and his after school athletics in tiptop shape, he deserves it. I think I’ll get it to him before the party, that way he’ll have the opportunity to capture the memories on tape—excuse me, video card
Typically, I’m not much of the parting type, but I went to a party the other night and it was so much fun. It was a 80s-themed dance party and everybody was dressed up as their favorite 80s persona. I dressed up like Madonna (circa Like a Virgin) and my boyfriend dressed as Boy George. Needless to say, we danced the night away to 80s hits. It got a little wild.
I realized just how wild when I watched a video my friend had posted online the next day. Apparently she had brought her high definition camcorder and had recorded much of the craziness of the night before. I won’t say what I was doing in the video but it was pretty…interesting.
Do you remember going to the movies as a kid and wondering about those tiny scratches and imperfections on the screen. These blemishes would flicker and disappear only to be replaced by new ones. Once you became engrossed in the movie, you managed to easily overlook them. By now you probably realize that those little blotches and scratches were actually part of the film frames.
Today, more and more films are being shot in digital video. Such influential directors as David Lynch, Steven Soderbergh and Michael Mann have embraced the digital format. While the cameras they use for motion picture cinematography are a bit more advanced than consumer-grade HD camcorders, the basic principles are the same. Part of the reason for this digital revolution has to do with storage issues. Digital films can be compressed and stored on disks whereas film reels are bulky and vulnerable.
